Rambutri Road - The Quieter Side of Khaosan, Bangkok

When visiting Bangkok in Central Thailand, you should not miss Rambutri Road, right in the center of Bangkok.

Walking down the green leafy fringed street that is Rambutri Road, it is hard to believe that the bright neon lights of Khaosan Road are only a parallel street away.

Located in the heart of old Bangkok in the Banglapoo neighborhood (also known as the Phra Nakhon district) and a few blocks from the Chao Praya River, Rambutri has a
great deal to offer from traditional Thai roadside eateries, laid- back bars,
beauty salons, charming boutique hotels to souvenir, crafts and clothing shops.
It is also known for its “Songkran” festivities otherwise known as Thai New Year where water throwing celebrations are custom and a lot of fun.

For sleeping, a great find is the boutique hotel Sleep Within. Centrally located and equipped with a rooftop pool and sundeck, this hotel provides a sanctuary from the hectic pace of Bangkok with affordable rates.. Further down Rambutri is the Viengtai Hotel, a larger hotel which offers a choice of reasonably priced room types and suites and also with an outdoor pool.

Further down the road you will find OR2K, a ‘fashion, music, art’ boutique. A little pricier than the market stalls that line Rambutri, the quality here of trendy clothes, jewelery and giftware are still great value for money and make an ideal gift for you or to take somebody back home as a gift.

When your stomach starts to rumble, Rambutri does not disappoint. For breakfast head to Tuptim Bed and Breakfast which serves poached eggs on toast to a traditional breakfast congee. Next door, Au Thong Restaurant, a colorful street eatery has an array of Thai dishes serving up lunch and dinner, with local musicians entertaining its diners in the evening with a medley of chilled out tunes.

If you prefer to ‘people watch’ the global mix of backpackers, tourists and locals passing through Rambutri, head to Molly’s Bar and order a few cold drinks and some Thai food. Enjoy the fans spraying cool mist under the trees lit up with starry fairy lights, a relaxing way to spend your evening.

If all the shopping, eating and drinking is taking its toll, what better way to top off your stay in Bangkok with a famous Thai massage perhaps followed by a facial or manicure/pedicure. With a choice of walk-in beauty salon and massage centers on Rambutri Road, you can enjoy an hour traditional Thai massage for around 200 baht (2009 price) which is a pretty good deal.

Within walking distance of Rambutri are a number of Bangkok landmarks. In fact Rambutri borders around Wat Chanasongkram, a small temple with shady grounds which provides a real sense of tranquility.
The origin of this temple dates back to the Ayutthaya period (1351 - 1767) and
is a must see if staying on Rambutri. Other nearby attractions include the temple
of Wat Intharawihan and its huge 32 meter Buddha, the Chao Praya River with its water taxis and endless traffic and the not to be missed night markets of Khaosan Road.

So next time you are in Bangkok head to Rambutri Road. Although this quiet strip is only a stone’s throw away from the South East Asian backpacking Mecca that is Khaosan Road, it really does manage to take the ‘edge’ off its famous counterpart and is well worth investing your time exploring.
