What you need to know while Traveling in New Zealand during the Summer

Milford Sound
The first thing you should know about traveling to New Zealand, is that it rains, and it rains a lot. On the West side of the South Island, the average rainfall is 1000 mm. So bring your poncho and all your rain gear.
Also be prepared for any and all weather conditions in New Zealand. At elevation at night, the temperature can drop to freezing, and it can even snow. It is not a bad idea to bring your winter gear, even in summer. The weather can be wild, but also makes for extraordinary views.
Make sure you take a boat ride on the Milford Sound right after it rains. The cascading waterfalls on the sound make Valhalla look like Oklahoma.
The best way to get around New Zealand is by car. Car rental prices are quite cheap compared with the price of bus tickets. When finding a rental car, make sure to shop around, compare prices, and tell the other rental companies of their competitors prices.
When renting a car, there is always roadside assistance and they will get you a new car immediately.

Queenstown
If you are staying for an extended time, your best bet might be to buy a car. Used cars are very cheap.
The price to buy a used camper van is fairly low as well. And at the end of your trip you can sell the van for only a couple hundred less.
If you are only visiting for a couple weeks to a month, this is a bad option. It takes about one to two weeks to buy and sell the vehicle. The other problem is that because these vans are recycled, they break down at least once on the trip. You might lose a couple of days, and it might cost you extra for repairs.
If you are staying in tourist towns such as Wanaka, Queenstown, or Te Anau, you should book a hotel well in advance. These towns are very popular tourist destinations and will fully book weeks to months ahead. When booking a hostel or camper van site, it also a good idea to book a week in advance.
There are always small towns 15-30 minutes outside of larger towns, that have accommodation, that does not fill up, and you will find the accommodation there usually cheaper.
New Zealand is a very friendly place to travel. There is no problem with violent crime or animosity towards travelers.
Likewise, there are no dangerous animals in New Zealand. There are two poisonous spiders, but you will never see them.
New Zealand is one of the most beautiful places on earth, a land of unspoiled nature and breath-taking views.
