Two types of vacations to enjoy in Maine

Portland Head Light - Built 1791
Portland Head Light - Built 1791

The state of Maine is one of the top travel destinations in the United States for residents along the east coast, but also from across the country.

People visit Maine to enjoy delicious seafood, hike spectacular mountains, breath clean fresh air and enjoy their favorite sports along the coast.

Portland is a hotspot for arts and Augusta is rich in history. Maine is large, diverse and above all, full of scenic wonders.

Maine features all types of accommodations, from chain hotels to charming Victorian bed and breakfasts, but one of the best ways places to stay in Maine as at your choice of campsites.

In virtually every corner of Maine you'll find a variety of campsites that offer tenters and RV travelers alike a comfortable and convenient place to stay.

Camping is perhaps the most casual style of accommodations you can choose, but it does involve planning.

You must book reservations at campgrounds in Maine well in advance to ensure you'll have a spot to pitch your tent.

All varieties of campgrounds fill up quickly during peak season months.

Much like choosing a hotel, booking campground reservations in Maine involves evaluating amenities.

Some campgrounds offer full showers and on-site shops, while others feature only restroom facilities.

You can choose a campground on a lake or on the coast that offers comfortable cabins and boat rentals or choose a remote campground that specializes in rugged, natural surroundings.

If you love lobster, you can even choose a campground that will cook your lobster on site at unbelievably low rates for a luxury-style picnic at your campsite.

Whatever type of campground you prefer, you'll enjoy saving significantly on the higher cost of hotels or inns. For approximately US$20 (2008 price), you can have your own campsite featuring a picnic table, fireplace and loads of atmosphere.

Although camping is the perfect way to enjoy Maine in the summer, the fall presents a different opportunity to enjoy travel in Maine.

The fall foliage season attracts many tourists to Maine, but accommodations are still incredibly affordable.

As beautiful as Maine is on a summer's day, it's even more glorious in autumn.

You can take advantage of incredibly low rates at top quality inns and hotels in Maine off season, and there's still plenty to do and see.

Fall is the perfect time for sightseeing in Maine.

You can explore museums, visit the dramatic coast, hike in the mountains or shop in quaint New England villages.

There are still warm, sunny days in Maine through October, and cooler nights present the perfect opportunity to enjoy a cozy fire.

If you happen to be in Maine when the snow starts to fall, you can take the opportunity to ski, toboggan or snowmobile.

Camden Snow Bowl along the coast is a scenic wonder in winter, or you can enjoy a smaller, more informal ski mountain experience at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington.

Whether your visit to Maine involves a summer camping trip or an autumn tour, Maine presents many opportunities to have fun exploring its incredible diversity.
